B.P.R.D. 1946-1948 HC Edition

Script by Mike Mignola, Joshua Dysart and John Arcudi, art by Patric Reynolds, Paul Azaceta, Gabriel Bá, Fabio Moon and Max Fiumara. All illustrations are ©Mike Mignola.

This article deals with Dark Horse B.P.R.D. material published in regular size canvas hardcovers (10.5 x 7 inches or 26.5 x 18 cm) with dust jacket and thick glossy paper (see also the end of this article).

1946-1948, fith volume in the collection, was published in June 2015 (ISBN: 978-1-61655-646-4, cover price $34.99, 470 pages).

Below is a picture taken for size comparison with one of the regular comic. For all the collection second and third of cover are black. This book has been printed in china (see also the picture of the binding).

The inner hardcover book comes with glossy golden printing (no illustration on back cover). This edition is designed by Amy Arendts and edited by Scott Allie.

There is a one page introduction written by Scott Allie, and a one page afterword written by Chris Roberson.
This fifth volume collects the following stories, with their respective virgin cover:
  • 1946
  • 1947
  • 1948
Note that each story are edited in books using covers of the previous paperbacks.
As a prologue, are also reprinted the two short stories:
  • Bishop Olek's Devil from Hellboy FCBD 2008
  • And What Shall I Find Here? from MySpace Dark Horse Presents #23

I have notice in this collected edition that each story finishes with young Hellboy

This volume ends with a comprehensive extra section (62 pages) divided by story and commented by Scott Allie (1946 and 1948), and Gabriel Bá and Fabio Moon (1947). I don't own the respective paperbacks but these sketches probably originates from them, therefore I don't thing this edition presents exclusive material.

Batman Année Un Édition Spéciale Limitée N&B 75 Ans

To read this article in English go here.

Batman Année Un (Batman Year One) :

Batman Year One French B&W 75th Anniversary Special Edition

Pour lire cet article en français, c'est ici. For a complete list of all books reviewed in this blog, please visit the index page.

Script Frank Miller, art David Mazzuchelli, all material is ©DC Comics.

These books are part of the French Urban Comics (the DC Comics label of Dargaud) collection published in May 2014 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Batman, along Hush, Dark Victory and Night of the Owls, with a limited print run of 3000 copies each (Killing Joke was published afterward). These are 12 x 8 inches (or 30 x 20 cm) hardcover books sharing the same collection design and published on very thick mat paper. In this article, we will focus on Batman Année Un.

Batman Année Un (Batman Year One):

This volume (ISBN: 978-2-3657-7518-2, 120 pages, cover price 19€) shares the same plain black second and third of cover with all the books from this collection. A picture below is for size comparison with the latest 2012 US Deluxe Edition reprint of this story (this French book can be seen as a B&W partial adaptation of this Deluxe edition).

The book opens with a two pages introduction written by the original editor of the 4 parts series Dennis O'Neil dated March 1988 (originally from the first 1988 TPB). It reprints Batman Year One in full clean B&W (no shades of grey).

Out of the 38 pages extra section produced by David Mazzucchelli featured in the US Deluxe edition, only the ten first pages and the 1988 Frank Miller afterword are included in this French edition. So the rough layouts paired with Miller's script, covers gallery, pencils and colouring process examples are missing (for obvious reason regarding the latter).

The Deluxe editions are described in this article.

The two first comments below refer to an early version of this article when the 2012 US deluxe edition was presented here. Now it has been moved in the Absolute edition article.
