Judge Dredd The Daily Dredds Vol 1 1981-1986 Exclusive 2000 AD Bookplate Edition

Script by John Wagner & Alan Grant and Richard Burton (first strip adaptation), art by Ron Smith (most majority of the strips), Ian Gibson (14 Saturday strips), Mick McMahon (first Saturday strip), John Higgins (1 Saturday strip), Steve Dillon (1 Saturday strip) and Brent Ewins (1 Saturday  strip). All material presented here is ©Rebellion A/S.

Published by Rebellion in November 2014 (ISBN 978-1-78108-264-5, 8 x 11.2 inches or 20 x 28.5 cm, 350 numbered pages, 35£) this hardcover book uses a format "à l'italienne" to fit the original newspaper strips. This edition was limited to 250 copies and could only been purchased through 2000 AD online web shop. It was advertised as featuring "a numbered bookplate, and a special Ron Smith Judge Dredd art print", but to better described it, it features a numbered Ron Smith bookplate/art print (mine is #201) and an additional numbered sticker on one of the opening pages (that is not what I would called a bookplate myself but English is not my mother tongue). Note that in fact, the sticker has been put on the regular edition of this book that shares the same ISBN.

The book is printing on thick glossy paper. Second and third of cover use the same illustration. One of the pictures below is for size comparison with volume 3 of Judge Dredd The Complete Case Files, and the other one is a zoom of the binding (very nice quality stuff here).

This first volume, designed by Simon Parr and Sam Greton, is introduced by Keith Richardson (editor of the book) and Richard Burton (original commissioning editor), and features a comprehensive two pages index of the dated strips.

Original material (all in B&W) originates from the Daily Star newspaper. All of the Saturday stories (two strips per Saturday) are collected here, along with the first two weekday strips from 1986 (one strip per day) and three miscellaneous strips. Each page displays title, credits and eventual reprint references. Impressive ant work here, congrats!

Ron Smith is the artist on a vast majority of the strips, on the left the first strip is drawn by Mike McMahon

Judge Dredd The Complete Brian Bolland IDW Limited Edition Red Label

Art by Brian Bolland, scripts by Pat Mills, John Wagner, Jack Adrian, Alan Grant and Joe Collins. All illustrations used here are ©Rebellion A/S.

This book has been published and exclusively distributed by IDW in February 2013, as a "Red Label" edition in their "IDW Limited" line. In this line, there are three labels in my understanding, Red (a few hundred of signed copies), Black and Blue (limited to a few copies each and displaying other exclusive incentives). There are no Black or Blue Label associated with this book.

This limited edition comes with a custom designed slipcase comprising an exclusive hardcover portfolio along with the main oversized hardcover book (ISBN 978-1-61377-488-5, 125$, 316 pages and 12.3 x 9.5 inches or 31.5 x 24 cm for the main book). This collection is designed by Robbie Robbins and edited by Justin Eisinger.

Let's begin with the main book. I'm not sure what is the meaning of the #1 on the spine for this book seems to reprint all of the Judge Dredd strips drawn by Brian Bolland. Below, the book is compared in size with a current 2000 AD copy (note that most of the strips dated when the magazine was published in a slightly larger size):

The book displays a red satin ribbon bookmark and a tracing paper overlay for the title page. This is a signed (both Brian Bolland and John Wagner) hand numbered and limited edition (350 copies, mine being #196). Second and third of cover are identical.

above and below two pictures showing the tracing paper overlay

The books starts with a 2 pages introduction by Brian Bolland. From time to time strips are separated with gray shades endpages. Note that due to the obvious editor intention, new reader will discover only parts of a whole stories, or even only two pages of a 6 pages strip. Along with the Judge Dredd strips, this book also collects thirteen "Walter the Wobot Fwiend of Dwedd" one page strips drawn by Brian Bolland and scripted by Joe Collins. You will find the complete list of reprinted strips at the end of this article.

a full colour strip from 2000ad annual 1982 is included

There is a comprehensive 47 pages gallery section at the end of the book, followed by a two pages strip credits.
